How Do You Retain Team Members?

You asked: “How do you keep your employees around? How are you able to retain your team members year after year?”

We answered: That’s a great question and something many employers fail to do! But it’s simple. Being kind, understanding, and patient is the key to keeping people around. If you do right by people, they’ll stick around and your investment in people will come back tenfold.

I’ve often observed people threatened by the success of their peers. Some people don’t like to see others excel and will do things to prevent that from happening. In psychology, this behavior became known as “The Crab Effect,” or “The Crab Mentality.” If you put a single crab in a bucket without a lid, eventually it will escape. But if you put multiple crabs in a bucket you won’t even need a lid because when one tries to escape, another will grab onto it and pull it back in! As a leader in business, I prefer to encourage my colleagues to better themselves and do what makes them happy. I enjoy mentoring and supporting people to lift them out of the bucket. When you help good people in the industry, you create the possibility for them to become a customer, clients, vendors, or partners in the future. By doing right by people they in turn want to do right by you and will give you, their teammates, your clients, and more all they have.
