Lombard Street Transformed Into Candy Land for 60th Anniversary
We’re throwing it back to August 2009 when we transformed Lombard Street into the world’s largest version of the Candy Land board game. In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the game, characters like King Kandy, Princess Lolly, and Queen Frostine lined the blue, yellow, orange, red, green, and purple read we know as Lombard Street.
Lombard Street, with its famous windy brick road and beautifully manicured gardens already look like something out of a storybook, making it the perfect spot for this whimsical event. The event crew used interlocking mats to cover the street in the colors of Candy Land. Costumed adults were brought in to portray the iconic board game characters, and kids from UCSF Children's Hospital and other local groups served as the game pieces.
The children were split into four teams of six children each and took turns moving as designated card drawers drew a color. When it was their turn to move, the kids ran, cartwheeled, somersaulted, and slid to the next color. At the end of the game, everybody got to celebrate with a piece of Candy Castle Cake.
